Been a bit, o’ alert ones, and I apologize for that. I’ve neglected to alert any of you for two whole weeks now!
The reason? Partially laaaaziness. Partially I was still freaking out a bit concerning my “near death” experience(see last Alert for the deets) and dealing with some of the after effects. Partially I just finished a juice cleanse(shudder) and it was difficult finding the energy to do much other than… drink the awful vegetable juice, I guess, during it.
But now I’m back! And I’ve got news of the interrupt-ery sort!
Which, now that I’m thinking(writing?) about it, I’ve noticed is a big part of a lot of the professional comics writers’ newsletters out there. They’re always dropping BIG BOMBSHELL NEWS ANNOUNCEMENTS about the projects they’re working on, issues that have either already released or are set to, publishers they’re working with, etc.
Me? I don’t really have that luxury at present, since I’m really only working on the one thing(although to be fair, it is an awesome thing), and I made my big announcement about it in the last Alert.
But luckily for me I got an email the other day with some pretty fantastic news! The series I was hired to write for Webtoon before they accepted my pitch for MoonRise is finally back on track! What does that mean? Well, I’ll tell you!
As I’ve mentioned a time or three before, the original artists that were hired to draw the series were, while very talented, unable to continue. As a result, while I scripted 26 episodes worth of content, only a single-digit amount of episodes ended up with finished art. Which remained the case until earlier this year when I reached out to the editorial powers-that-be over at Webtoon and they told me that they were on the verge of hiring new artists. Well, fast forward to the email I received this past week and those artists have been hired!
What’s even nicer is that my editor reached out to me not only to share the news, but with an offer to introduce the team to one another through a Zoom call so we could all get to know each other and start building a rapport. Said meeting took place this past Thursday and went really well! I got the opportunity to meet both artists, and realized one of them, the incredibly talented Suzi Blake, who by the way also works on the fantastic(bat-tastic?) Webtoon series Batman: Wayne Family Adventures, had actually followed me on twitter prior to the meeting. Follow her and like all the drawn things!
Oh but there’s more! According to what was revealed during the meeting, if all goes as planned enough episodes should be produced that the series could potentially debut before the end of the year! And if that happens then I’ll have not one, but two Webtoon Original series coming out in 2022!
So, uh… happy trombone? Is there a sound for that?
Quickies
-Why did I juice?!?! That wedding I might’ve mentioned in a previous Alert is fast approaching and I have not been responsible in any way, shape or form. Actually, I guess the shape or form in this case would be round, but still! Before juicing, which I finished the Monday previous to this past one, I was easily back up to 295 lbs, if not more. However, after juicing and then eating healthier and exercising a bit, this past Saturday morning I was 277.2, so… a marked improvement. Though I suppose still not anything to crow about. Lots of work yet to be done. Wedding is October 7th. Can I drop another 10 betwixt now and then?
…hey, I dunno, that’s why I’m asking you!
-Watched The Bad Guys a few weeks back. There’ve been various attempts to use the Ocean’s Eleven model of ensemble cast heist movies to varying degrees of success, so I suppose it was only a matter of time before they did an animated version. And what do you know? It worked! I’d certainly recommend it if you’re looking for something to occupy either yourselves, your kids, or maybe even some bad guys you’re trying to get away from… it could work!
-Comics Writing 101. Late last year comics writing superstar Scott Snyder(who I just realized I wasn’t following on twitter, shame on me) released, and may even still be in the process of releasing, a series of comics writing classes through his own Substack - Best Jackett Press. And I definitely took part in 2 or 3 of them! Annnnnnd thennnnnn… I stopped. Now, to be fair, I was deep in the process of pitching my Webtoon Original series at the time as well as a number of other projects that were, uh… less successful. But! I’ve recently decided to pick it back up again as the knowledge Scott and his comics superstar guests were sharing actually did help me quite a bit during the pitching process and beyond. So expect some updates on what I’m gleaning from those classes week to week in Exner Alerts to come.
-The Disasters comics out in the wild! So this is pretty cool. Veterans of the Exner Alert may remember that my longtime comics collaborator and all-around amazing comics letterer Micah Myers kickstarted(kickstartered?) a self-published comic series called The Disasters! A comic about, as the tweet describes humorously below, bad guys who are bad at being bad. I assisted in this endeavor by providing editing and proofreading duties, but y’all, even if I hadn’t they’re an entertaining(and really funny!) bunch of comics and you’d be doing yourselves a disservice by not going out and swooping them up like gentleman, scholar and comics creator in his own right Dakota Brown did down below.
Where can you do that, you ask? Well, that’s actually the second news item I have for you this week, o’ alert ones, as Micah and I hashed some things out and we’re planning to move the entire Loophole Comics library over to Global Comix!
Very soon you’ll be able to read each and every issue of Adamant, The Disasters, Lesser Evils, The Elvis Adventures and so much more! More on that as we get things situated, but with luck in no time at all Loophole Comics will be back and better than ever!
I am sorry about your near-death experiences. But you won't get any sympathy from me for the juice cleanse. It seems to have helped you some. no need to apologize for long times between postings. You are the one doing stuff for us not the other way around. If you just quit comics and make your way in the world as a salesman or a whatever we will still be in your debt for all the stuff you have done for us, particularly 'Adamant'. You actually finished the story! And it was great! :)
